Why You Should See London West End Musicals on Vacation

Everyone knows there are plenty of “triple-threats” on the Broadway stages in New York City – talented performers that excel in acting, singing and dancing. But London has its own theatre district to rival the famous productions in the Big Apple: the West End. London West End musicals are so ingrained in British culture that they annually host West End Live, a summer Saturday afternoon that showcases live clips from the season’s most popular performances. Whichever show you pick, a musical in London’s theatre district is a holiday must.

London’s West End

Although musical casts tour the globe to bring their productions to smaller cities, too, visitors will especially enjoy attending a musical in London’s West End. The theatres in London are beautiful. Some, like the Victoria Palace Theatre (that hosts ‘Hamilton’) and the Lyceum Theatre (that hosts ‘The Lion King’), are even distinguished as Grade II* special interests buildings. The UK capital’s world-class status and value of art also ensure that the most skilled performers star in each production.

West End musical shows are a great diversion from everyday London and its locals. Although London is sophisticated and generally open-minded, the city’s resident are quiet and reserved; this makes viewing dramatic stories spring to life in music and dance on stage even more exciting.

Although you could attempt to score leftover tickets on the show day and “risk it for a biscuit,” as the British say, you’re much better off booking theatre tickets ahead of time. (I’m still kicking myself for missing ‘An American in Paris.’)

Bring the entire family to gawk at ‘The Lion King’ – from its fanciful costumes to its clever choreography and moving music. (Thanks, Elton John and Hans Zimmer.) If you’re adults, you’ll burst out laughing at the clever inappropriate jokes in ‘Book of Mormon.’ But should you go solo, opt for a touch of magic with ‘Wicked.’ There are plenty of London West End musicals to enjoy.
