The Promise of 1600 Pandas in Taipei

In anticipation of the 1600 Pandas Exhibit during 2014, the Taipei Mass Rapid Transit decorated their metros to feature cartoon versions of endangered giant pandas of China and Formosan black bears of Taiwan.

These were the best cars to sit in, cruising across town while merrily viewing panda caricatures cycling on Taiwanese You-Bikes, riding Taipei’s Maokong Gondola, pushing strollers, holding their young and lazing about, looking adorable.

The actual display of 1600 papier-mâché pandas (and 200 Formosan black bears) took place at Civic Plaza in front of Taipei City Hall from February 28 – March 9, 2014 between the hours of 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM.  I traveled to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial to see the official exhibit when they were stationed between the National Theater and Concert Hall Plaza from March 14 – 30, 2014.
