If you would like to free views of the Statue of Liberty from a boat without paying a cruise fee, consider boarding the free Staten Island Ferry for glimpses of Lady Liberty as you cross from Manhattan to the island and back.
You won’t learn historical information and your smart phone photos won’t capture the scene in any great detail, but the trip and views are very enjoyable. Board the ship, go straight to the railing for a prime viewing spot and enjoy the fresh air as you glide past the USA’s icon of freedom.
- Do not sit on the deck benches if you want to see the Statue of Liberty. You will quickly find your view blocked as soon as the rest of the passengers board and stand in front of you.
- It is not possible to get off at Staten Island and run back onto the same ship going back. Enjoy your time on the island – or pay for a slightly overpriced piece of New York pizza at the terminal and board the next ferry.
